About the workshop
The Workshop
Kenya Weaverbird is a small, exclusive hand weaving and pottery workshop located in Nairobi, Kenya. It was set up to produce high quality contract furnishing fabrics and carpets for Hotels in East Africa. Over the years it has branched into making a large range of carpets, wall hangings, and other home accessories such as decorative cushions, placemats, napkins, bedspreads as well as clothes. In 1992 the pottery was set up to compliment the textile range and specializes in functional tableware with a touch of Africa.
The Textiles
The textile items are made from handspun Kenyan wool and then hand woven on high twist machine spun cotton warps. All of the colours are custom mixed and dyed over fuel efficient wood burning “jikos”. All of the yarn is colorfast and mothproofed. The workshops are located on 8 acres on the outskirts of Nairobi with a small renewable forest planted to supply the wood for the dying. The wall hangings and accessories are unique reflections of Africa and are individually appliquéd using the hand-woven fabrics.
The Pottery
The pottery is hand thrown and hand painted stoneware made from Kenya clay managed by one of East Africa's leading potters Waithira Chege. All glazes are lead free and the pottery is oven proof, microwave and dishwasher safe.
